He is the best friend of Mike Wheeler, Eleven, Lucas Sinclair, Will Byers, Max Mayfield, Eddie Munson and Steve Harrington, and is Suzie Bingham's friend.

Dustin was somewhat of a typical "nerd" and had a rare genetic condition that prevented his teeth from developing properly, making him a prime target for bullies.

He arrived at Hawkins Middle School in the fourth grade, developing a strong bond with Mike, Lucas and Will and becoming best friends.
