Per Mertesacker is a German football manager and former professional player who played as a central defender. He is the current Arsenal Academy manager.
At national level, Mertesacker played for Germany at under-20 and under-21 levels, before making his debut for the senior team in 2004 against Iran.
On his debut, Mertesacker established himself as Germany's first-choice defender for ten years, appearing at the 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Championship, as well as the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, winning the latter.
