"The Long Dark" is a careful exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore in the wake of a geomagnetic disaster.

WINTERMUTE is the five-episode narrative mode for The Long Dark.

The episodic story is based on the award-winning survival sandbox gameplay that has placed The Long Dark at the top of many "best of" lists since the game's release in 2014.

Adding a thoughtful narrative experience that explores the history and current mysteries of Great Bear Island as the survivors there face the "Quiet Apocalypse."

WINTERMUTE tells the story of bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood as they race to save an isolated community from the ravages of this deadly wilderness.



Characteristics:

- Pilot Will Mackenzie (player character) and Dr. Astrid Greenwood are separated after their plane crashes in the Canadian northern wilderness following a mysterious flash of light in the sky.
- Struggling to survive while desperately searching for Astrid, Mackenzie stumbles upon the small town of Milton, where she begins to understand the magnitude of this silent apocalypse.
- Mackenzie's search for Astrid takes him further into the wild wilderness of winter. A mysterious trapper may be the key to finding Astrid.



- Following the events of Milton, an enigmatic stranger saves Dr. Astrid Greenwood (player character) from death.
- Facing the blizzard in Pleasant Valley, Astrid must use all her medic skills to help the survivors she encounters.
- A criminal gang of convicts has captured Mackenzie.
- Desperate to escape one of the darkest corners of Big Bear Island, he must somehow survive his fiercest enemy yet.
