Sauron, the eponymous Lord of the Rings, was the greatest Maia subversive, maker of the One Ring, renowned disciple of Aulë, and chief agent of Morgoth.

After Morgoth's ouster by the Valar, Sauron became the second Dark Lord and attempted to conquer most of Arda by cunning.

At the end of the Second Age, Sauron caused the fall of Númenor and was then defeated in Mordor in the War of the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.

Sauron returned to power at the end of the Third Age and strove to dominate Middle-earth. He was eventually defeated upon the destruction of his Ring at Osanda Mountain.
