England, 12th century: The monk Philip becomes abbot of the small abbey of Kingsbridge. At the same time, a boy named Jack is being raised in the woods by his outcast mother.

His apprenticeship as a stonemason paves the way for him to become a great architect.

Soon his steps lead him to Kingsbridge, where he will build one of the largest cathedrals England has ever seen.

Aliena and Richard are forced to survive on their own after the brothers' father, the Count of Shiring, has been imprisoned and eliminated. Aliena vows to make her brother the rightful heir and Count of Shiring.

Like Jack, their journey takes them to Kingsbridge, Aliena puts her expertise as a merchant to good use, supporting the construction of the cathedral, and falls in love with Jack.

But Kingsbridge and his men are in great danger. Philip's rivals, Bishop Waleran and Wiliam, a vengeful noble rejected by Aliena, see the city and its rise to prominence as a thorn in their flesh.
