Using a compass, you can always determine the correct direction. To know which is the direction, people have given different names to the directions.

So you have North, East, South and West. On a map, the top is always North and the bottom is South, East is to the right and West to the left. Look at the compass.

This will show all four directions as shown on a map. A compass has a notch that always points north.

Turn the compass around, then the pointer is also around so it still continues to point back north. If you know where you are on the map and you know where you want to go, you go in the right direction using a compass.

Look on the map in whatever direction your goal is. Now look at the compass and see where north is. To the east leave the red notch all the time to your left and pointing west all the time to the right.

If you are going north, follow the red pointer needle. If you are going south, go exactly opposite the red indicator needle.
